What is CD-ROM?

Compact disc read-only memory, are the words that are actually extracted from the word CD-ROM. It is actually known as a compact disc which is in pre-pressed format. It can store data up to a specific limit which can be read as many times as a user want but the data writing processing can be done only once and re-writing can not be done on CD-ROM.

Usually CD-ROM contains data related to the storage and accessibility needs of computers but nowadays it is being used to store music and video files as well. These are also used by many other companies related to the businesses of multimedia applications and video games as any kind of data can be stored on these compact discs. You probably will see some of the CDs in which data files will also be found along with the music related files (audio or video both) and they can be played on CD player very easily.

On the other hand data CDs that contain any kind of application, software or digital video can only be accessed through computer and these kinds of CDs are widely known as enhanced CDs. It is seen that lowercase letters are being used by many people to write this word but the proper way to write the word CD-ROM is to write it in all capital letters. Hyphen must be put between these two words i.e. ROM and CD.

Initially CD-ROM was abbreviated with the words “Compact Disc Read-Only Media” which is probably the best and correct definition of this word I guess. The data storage capacity of this technology was more than the capacity of hard drives that were installed in the computer at the time of introduction of this technology. Devices that are known with the name CD-ROM drives are being used to read this technology.
